A good experience, but far from perfect.

I went with my girlfriend to the Scottish Cooking class at the Edinburgh School of Food and Wine in August 2008. The setting is amazing, set amoungst a country estate just outside Edinburgh. The set up of the school itself is also good. We were tutored by a French chef on the day who was truly superb. He was very friendly, funny and very good at what he does. I picked up a number of tips from him and did learn some new things. The down side was that at no point did I make anything on my own. Two out of three of the courses were made between four people. So I only made a tiny part of it. That was not learning in the slightest. I may as well have gone to a demonstration day to do that rather than spending £110. The other disappointing thing was that they were totally under prepared. They only had enough food for two people between four for all of the courses so constantly had to rush around getting extra ingredients from storage to make up. This was both frustrating and time consuming. We ended up going over by an hour and a half. Overall, this course was good enough based purely on the chef. His helpers and the actual structure of the course was very poor. Maybe all cooking courses are like this. Less hands on and more standing around watching. If they are I won't be spending £110 again.
